Kateshi Estate was established in 1972 as one of the first coffee estates in Zambia.
Sustainability lies at the heart of operations at Kateshi Estate with almost 600ha of land on the estate being protected forested with a high conservation value. Olam, the owner of the estate, provides safe drinking water to over 20,000 local villagers and supports 3 schools that provide over 1,500 students with both primary and secondary education. A clinic on the estate also provides for the medical needs of the surrounding community.
Kateshi Estate is the first and only coffee estate in Zambia to employ women for traditionally male-dominated roles such as driving tractors and larger equipment such as road graders and bulldozers. A strong focus on gender equality means this coffee directly contributes to the empowerment of women in the region.
The Division 1 football team in the Zambia national league, the Kateshi Coffee Bullets features many players who are also employed by Olam, who sponsor the team, providing more opportunities for the local communities around Kateshi Estate.
